I am on the verge of buying a Blackwolf Mantis tent for the boat. It will be my third Blackwolf and I think they're great. I prefer a tent to a tarp or bivy and have read forum members' views on lightweight shelters. The Mantis weighs 2.3kg and costs under $200 on ebay. I would like a tent under 2kg if possible with a small packed up profile.
Before I commit, has anyone used a Mantis or recommend another tent that fits my requirements?

Hey Brad,
I have the Mantis and find it suits my needs. You just might need to check the internal dimensions, it might be a tight fit for you length ways. |

I had a similar design tent , which had doors on both sides which was great for cross ventiation. The only problem I found was the size of the doors, hard to get in and out of when your 6ft'4. Not a heap of room inside either.
I'm now using a Danali ...something (cheapie from Anaconda) The advantage is that the door is the whole side of the tent, more space inside as well and still only around 2kg So far it has kept me dry and free from bugs G Raider |

I recently bought a Blackwolf Dragonfly.
Haven't had the chance to use it yet, but lts nice and compact. Quite light too. Would easily fit into any yak's hatch. Paid about $350.00 for it new. |

Best all round tent is the MSR Velo. Huge vestibule big enough to sit in and cook as well as store all your gear. Pity they don't make it anymore.
Next best is the Sea to Summit Dart 2. Accessible from both sides, two large vestibules and free standing. Mine has come through many storms unscathed. http://www.seatosummit.com.au/showdetai ... WEDART2SIL |

One of my favorits at the moment is a tarp tent "raindow" it can be free standing , has grate ventalation can comfortably fit 2 and ways in at 650g and folds to les than a bivie bag .I also favor one of the Henacie hamoks ,its nice to be of the ground in sum places and I can pitch it like a tent when thers no trees to hang from

I bought an oztrail promo tent about 3 years ago for $30 ,for a river trip with quite a bit of whitewater ,I thought being winter and strong winds and rain ,it would probably not last the distance but for $30 even if I threw it in a bin at the end ,it was a bargain. I've still got it and it's still going strong ,weighs 2 kgs .Only drama is fibreglass poles ,one snapped a couple of months ago in a thunder storm ,but it was a wild storm ,nothing like lying on your back at 0200 in the morning with your feet in the air trying to keep the poles supported for 20 minutes but got a replacement pole for $10 .

I use a Wilderness Equipment Dart 1 for 1 man trips in the bush and until recently a Macpac Minaret for sea kayak trips but after spending a very wet and windy week in the Minaret with my wife travelling around Macquarie Harbour by kayaks we decided we wanted a bit more room. The best option we found was the One Planet Wurley, a tent made for use by school groups etc. Very tough, a little heavy at 3.5kg but really what's an extra 1.5 kg in a kayak? And heaps of room for two people. http://www.oneplanet.com.au/industrial/index.php?view=article&catid=7&id=37%3Ahumpy&Itemid=5&option=com_content
I have a Mont Moondance III coming for 2 person bush trips Geoff |

I have a McPac Minaret (2kg) which I used recently in NZ it is excellent and still maintains the old McPac Multi-pitch system. It is rated a 2 person but i find it a spacious 1 person tent. Its bomb proof having delt with up to 120+ kph winds very well. It is a temperate weather tent, having only one entrance, ventilation isn't great for warm weather camping. I think the Wilderness Equipment (STS) Dart 2 (2.6kg) is much better suited for warmer weather as its probably the best ventilated tent out there and very well made too. I also have one of the discontinued McPac Citadel's a rated 3 person makes a very comfortable 2 person with cavernous vestibule space at 4kg with multi-pitch its a brilliant tent when I take the missus. The citadels come up on eBay every now and then.

That would be a "one man" or "two person" tent
That would be a... nevermind. |

Hey Mick those Hennessy hammocks look really interesting, but I was wondering how you pitched them without trees, do you use paddles to keep them up or something?
|
|
|
yes you can yous your spear paddle to pitch the fly , and suport the insect net at one end. I also quite often just yous a tarp , I never cary poles for it , and only 6 pegs, sumtimes less , you always have 2 paddles with you , and if your in a grop you can yous ther paddles to lift the corners for comunal living.

Hey Mick,
I have had a Hennessy Hammock for a few years too after Seabear talked me into it. I have used it a few times and worked out that lying corner to corner keeps it more level but have to have some form of insulation under me to keep the cold off my back. I have used both an insulated sleeping mat which was good and a space blanket but that was a bit noisy. What do you use? Raider |

I insulate the botom with my thermorest, normaly I dont bother inflating it, its also handy when im camped on the ground when thers no trees to pich it in.

My paddling buddies would say I collect tents but my current Big Agnes Emerald Mountain SL3 tent is the best tent Ive owned. The optional vestibule is great for entertaining mates on a wet evening and it all under 3kg for a 3 man tent and vestibule with a tent area of 44sq ft and vestibule of 40 sq ft. I also have owned a Hennesey hammock for over 10 years and its a great piece of kit for sleeping in the tropics. Ive never actually been to an island where it couldnt be put up and when the wind and rain is really blowing I just get in my Goretex bivy bag and go back to sleep while my tent buddies hold on for their lives.

To follow up on my original post, I bought the Mantis and took it to Kosciuszko for some hiking. It pitches quickly and was quite comfortable with no condensation. The wind on the Main Range howls all day long and the Mantis was steady as a rock. Vestibules are small and there's not a lot of room to sit up in but for a kayak tent it will be fine. As a backpacking tent, at 2.5kg it is a bit too heavy. The Mantis is not dear if you buy on-line and I recommend it for kayakers.
