I am for looking for plans/instructions for making an Aleut paddle. I would like to make one to compare it with the Greenland paddle I have already made.

That Freek, is certainly useful! Nice, concise drawing, even when not in english...

lucky for me that I can understand the lingo (happens to be Italian).
Too bad though that I am too gumby to attempt carving a wooden paddle... for some reason I am more inclined to do stuff with resin and fiberglass If needed I can help with the translation of instructions http://gnarlydognews.blogspot.com/

Karrazy I've made good use of an article in the December 2006 issue of Sea Kayaker titled Making an Aleut Paddle. I base my paddles on these dimensions and find they perform better than expected. Van.

Hi Vanilla,
Thanks for the info, I will check it out! Would I be right in saying that your paddles are quite different than the above diagram with the italian instructions? Karrazy When you just love to paddle

I carve a finer edge on my blade and usually have a groove running the length of the centre ridge. Other than that a very similar shape. There are some shots on gnarlydogs flickr site with those very paddles.

I have just taken delivery of an other Vanstix Aleut paddle.
This one has a narrower blade and a single ridge (similar to the Italian drawings posted earlier). Surprisingly again this paddle is not any slower than my wider bladed one. Less is more? maybe... A bit lighter and easier to handle for extended paddle roll techniques I still think that the Aleut is an easier paddle for cruising (maybe my technique is lousy and the GP requires a bit more attention when powering off) For rolling however I do prefer the Greenland paddle; it offers a bit more lift and a bit less drag when sculling http://gnarlydognews.blogspot.com/

One of these days I'll have to add an Aleut to my quiver of sticks!
