Sealed launched from the beach

Don't quite get that Gnarly. A seal launch for us is being lifted off the rocks and taken out by a swell.....
How do you seal launch from a beach?

Geoff, I hear the local instructors call it seal launch, so I just thought that's what it is called.
I mean: on the shoreline, in the surf zone, where the waves wash up on the beach, I hop in the kayak, spray deck myself up, and then wait for a wave to get under my hull.
Most times a bit of a scoot along the beach with my knuckles is necessary and often maybe a bit of a push with my paddle.
What do you guys call that in Tassie?

Gotta agree with Geoff. A seal launch has always been exactly as he explained it and there is usually a drop involved if you are too impatient to wait for a wave. It can even be off a jetty, a pontoon or even a river bank which can be a bit of fun in a Mirage with that rudder setup.

Hi Gnarly,
That's a beach launch mate. Seal launches (and landings) are really best avoided if possible, there is a lot of potential for damage to kayak and body. You saw a good example of it on Larry Gray's "Skinning Chickens" at the Rock n Roll.

At last, we tackle the big issues....the seal launch!

I always thought the transition from the hard stuff to the wet stuff while in one's boat was a seal launch.

Clearly I stand corrected, however this does raise a number of questions?

Is a rocky beach a seal or beach launch?

What if there is no swell?

What if there is swell but no rocks?

What if a seal launches from the beach? Is that a seal launch?

I'm going to lie down now, I feel tired

Geoff,
thank you for educating me and clearing the misused term "seal launch"
Gray Raider has some valid points: what if the seal launches from the beach?

I will use the term "beach launch" so I won't cause any unnecessary grief with some paddlers (GAZ01 reply that was deleted from this Forum) ; it seems that it is regarded a very touchy subject, for some unknown reason to me...

I reckon that would be called a reverse beach launch Gnarly.
Seals are most often found on rocks above the swell hence the name. I don't think beaches come into it. I can't say I have seen a lot of seals launching off beaches either.
Too many questions Gray Raider, even if I thought about it with both heads :-)

Geoff,
there are no seals in Queensland to have as reference... :-)
I hereby declare the Qld "seal launch" renamed to "croc launch"
I believe crocs do launch from sandy beaches, sometimes mud.
I hope I don't upset anybody with a "croc launch"

The taswegians that do not spell all that gooderer might be tempted to call that a C rock launch and therefore still deem it to be a seal launch.

Hey Mojo,
You could try a seal launch from the Urangan Pier, but ley me know first so that I can be there with camera to capture the moment and I won't copyright it so that everybody can share the happy snap.. as mates do.

I'd call that a stuffup. I think we can all identify that one. The ol 180 degree on a wave trick. Step two is being deposited on the beach by the next wave to start all over again if you can complete the manouvre in an upright position.
