Once again I shall be camping on Peel Island for Clean Up Australia Day. Anybody who wishes to join me is more than welcome. I will have a supply of bags and gloves. Last year we removed 12 large bags of rubbish off the beach at Horseshoe Bay, and the way I've observed non-kayakers treating the Island, we will probably do the same.

I reckon this year we give Seabear some gloves and put him on doggie doo patrol. He has been studying their habits on Peel for a while now.

Dogs on Peel Island are a disgrace and until the gutless rangers enforce the law this magical place will continue to be a toilet for every boaties dog. If I took my dog for a walk on Moreton Island during the dolphin feed how long do you think Id last. Less than a minute. Dont get me started. If I can I'll be over to help, I wont be able to camp. I agree, sad, while we were there Aust Day, lots of dogs. Morning and arvo poo walks. Someone? mentioned the ranger can only police above the high water line, does anyone know if this is true?

The marine park and national park boundary is at the mean high tide mark and dogs are not allowed to enter the national park. Most dogs on Peel go beyond this mark and when I camped with Pete and Christie a family was camped beside us with 3 dogs. I had a discussion with the ranger and he informed me that if I didnt like it complain to his supervisor or my local member of parliament. As all dogs come via boat I do not know why they cant explain the law and then ask the owners to put the dogs back on their boat. There is no need to fine anybody and people would slowly become aware of the regulations as they clearly disregard signage. Seabear |

I agree with Seabear about the dogs. I also feel the anger. Nearly every time we camp there, we see dogs wandering around where they shouldn't be. It is a disgrace and unfortunately is not policed by the rangers which is regrettable as Peel Island is arguably the most popular destination for most seakayakers in Moreton Bay and the QPWS doesn't seem to regard it as important. Maybe it has something to do with the ongoing native title claim that I am told is not yet resolved.
As for my mate Seabear, we will take a set of boxing gloves in case a ranger does show up so he can swap his doggie doo stained plastic ones for more appropriate ones to discuss the issue. Raider |

Hey G Raider,
I will try and make it again this year but I wil leave the dog droppings to Patrick. If I remember correctly from last year it was disposable nappies that annoyed me the most. I will keep an eye out for the silver fern. See you then, Karrazy When you just love to paddle

Another sucessfull clean up. Due to the bad weather I wimped out on the camping and just made it a day trip. Myself and Raider picked up 7 bags of rubbish from Horseshoe Bay while my Brother in Law Geoff and my nephew Josh picked up another 3 bags from Platapus Bay. Slighty less than last year which is encouraging.
Many Thanks to Geoff and Josh for the use of their powerboat for the transportation of the garbage and their help in cleaning up Platapus Thanks to Raider for his help Same time, Same place, Next Year. G Raider Feels good, we made a difference |

Aw shucks Grey Raider, twernt nuthin'
One thing I did notice though guys, if you know any boaties who drink beer from cans and tear the empty can in half before tossing it overboard, tell them they don't sink and they all end up on the beach at Horseshoe bay where they are very handy for cutting bare feet. I reckon I picked up about 20 pieces of torn aluminium can today. I also came to the conclusion that most boaties are amputees. I found several single thongs but no matching ones to make a pair. I hope that next year when any kayaker visits Peel on this weekend he or she can make the effort to at least pick up some rubbish even if it is only in the immediate area where they land. It all helps. After all we all go there a lot and it is arguably the most popular kayaking venue in Moreton Bay. |

Hi Grey Raider and Raider,
I am sorry I didn't make it yesterday, I will have to pick up double next year. Keep up the good work and I hope to see you both out on the water again soon! Karrazy When you just love to paddle
